RMI - Sugar is an important commodity on a consumption and industrial scale. Indonesia turns out to be one of the potential markets, then what is Indonesia's ranking? The following is all about sugar production in Indonesia, quoting from the official page of the International Sugar Organization (ISO).

From October 2021 to September 2022, the world's top ten sugar producing countries are Brazil, India, the European Union (EU), China, the United States (US), Thailand, the Russian Federation, Mexico, Pakistan and Australia. Their production accounts for 70 percent of global output. And in 2021, world sugar consumption will increase after having decreased in the previous three years. Based on ISO records, it shows an increase of 0.155 million tons so that total consumption in 2021 will be 168.470 million tons.

However, sugar consumption per capita in 2021 will drop to 21.4 kilograms. This is down 0.2 kilograms from the previous year. Consumption of sugar has reached a high level of 23 kilograms per capita in 2016. So, which market consumes the most of this sweet potato? On the ISO page, it is stated that the most users of sugar include India, the EU, China, the US, Brazil, Indonesia, the Russian Federation, Pakistan, Mexico and Egypt. So it's answered, Indonesia is in sixth place in this ISO version of the report.

ISO notes that there are around 110 countries producing sugar, both produced from sugarcane or sugar beets. However, sugar derived from sugarcane accounts for almost 80 percent of global sugar production. Interestingly, sugar cane does not only produce sugar. Sugarcane also offers an alternative to animal feed as well as a source of fiber and energy. Sugarcane is even called the best and most efficient source of biomass for the production of ethanol-based bioenergy.

ISO is an international organization committed to improving the condition of the world sugar market. This organization is headquartered in London, England, and now has 87 member countries. Indonesia has applied for membership since 2011. ISO is proactive towards the utilization of ethanol from sugarcane crops. The goal is to increase the role of bioenergy in the global energy map in the future.
