Gapgindo and the Ministry of Agriculture Continue To Work On Curriculum Link And Match Scheme for The Sugar Industry
The Ministry of Agriculture through the Agricultural Extension and Human Resources Development Agency (BPPSDMP) and the Indonesian Sugar Producers Association (Gapgindo) continues to work on a link-and-match curriculum scheme for the sugar industry. Both are currently synergizing to prepare a curriculum to create competent human resources (HR) in the field of sugarcane plantations and the sugar industry.

Gapgindo Chairman who is also the Vice President of PT Rejoso Manis Indo Syukur Iwantoro said that this synergy is one of the concrete steps that show the seriousness of national sugar stakeholders to realize the independence of the archipelago's sugar graduallym. According to him, this scholarship program is a continuation of the Ministry of Agriculture's program that has been running. However, this time the scheme is devoted to the curriculum to meet the needs of the sugar industry. They hope this scheme will come into effect starting from the 2024/2025 academic year.

This scholarship scheme will mainly target residents at the location of sugar factories that are members of Gapgindo. Currently, sugar factories under Gapgindo are located in South Sumatra, Java, and East Nusa Tenggara. The parties involved in this cooperation will develop a curriculum that suits the land at the location of Gapgindo factories. Pusdiktan, PEPI, Polbangtan Bogor, and Polbangtan Malang are working with PT Muria Sumba Manis in Waingapu, Sumba, NTT. They will develop a curriculum for sugarcane on rocky land. In East Java, there are PT Rejoso Manis Indo, PT Kebun Tebu Mas, PT Rajawali I, and PT Kebon Agung. They are working with Pusdiktan, Polbangtan Malang, PEPI, and Polbangtan Bogor to prepare a special curriculum for sugarcane on dry land. Meanwhile, in Ogan Komering Ilir (OKI), South Sumatra, PT Pratama Nusantara Sakti is located on swamp land. The company is working with Pusdiktan, Polbangtan Medan, SMKPPN Sembawa, Polbangtan Bogor, PEPI, and Mektan's Agricultural Instrument Standardization Agency (BSIP) (UPT team) to develop a curriculum for sugarcane on swampland.

According to Syukur, professional and competent human resources in the sugarcane sector are still scarce. This is felt in both on-farm and off-farm activities. He admitted that one of the reasons is that the sugar industry operates with specific technology. Previously, Gapgindo also tried to overcome other challenges such as the availability of superior sugarcane seeds and the limitations of sugarcane technology and agricultural machinery (alsintan) that are suitable for specific land conditions.

Syukur gave an example of two Gapgindo members who currently manage land that is different from sugarcane fields in Java. There is PT Muria Sumba Manis on rocky land in Sumba, and PT Nusantara Pratama Sakti on swamp land.

Furthermore, Gapgindo also realizes that limited capital is one of the challenges of farmer partners working with sugar mills, especially in Java. Gapgindo also encourages partnership schemes so that sugar factories can help improve the welfare of farmers in the factory environment.
