Blitar - The implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) and zero waste technology of PT Rejoso Manis Indo (RMI)-Mitr Phol was reviewed by Expert Staff of the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Ir Prihasto Setyo, MSc and Chairman of Pandu Tani Indonesia (Patani) Sarjan Tahir, Thursday (5/9/2024). 

During the working visit to PG RMI, Prihasto said that this visit aims to assess and explore the practices and technology applied in this modern sugar factory. According to him, his party and a team from BSIP (Agricultural Environmental Instrument Standardization Center) wanted to see several aspects related to carbon capture technology that had been implemented. Later his party wants to understand how the process and mechanism of carbon capture technology that has been running. In addition, they are interested in exploring and knowing how carbon capture can have economic value, including incentives from the government, such as tax breaks or carbon trading.

“The first step of this system is that we must first measure it qualitatively and quantitatively with internationally and nationally recognized methodologies,” Prihasto said.

rihasto encouraged PT RMI-Mitr Phol to go one step further by applying for an SPE. The sugar factory in Blitar was then recommended to apply for a greenhouse gas (GHG) Emission Reduction Certificate (SPE).  This process was carried out in collaboration with a research institute to measure greenhouse emissions from the company's CCS implementation. The move is expected to open up opportunities to further develop CCS technology. 

PT RMI-Mitr Phol Vice President Director Syukur Iwantoro expressed the company's readiness to follow up on the recommendation. He also welcomed the working visit which he considered as part of the government's monitoring and appreciation of industry initiatives in implementing high environmental standards.

PT RMI-Mitr Phol runs a modern sugar factory that operates by applying the zero waste principle. The principle enables the company to become a sustainable industry.

The company has been awarded the Blue Certificate from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia (RI). Currently, the company is in the process of obtaining a Green Industry Certificate from the Indonesian Ministry of Industry. This confirms the company's commitment to environmentally friendly industrial practices.
